Are Social Workers the same as licensed therapists?
Yes! Social workers are highly trained, licensed mental health professionals who provide therapy, counseling, and critical support services across diverse settings. While Hollywood often portrays social workers as solely involved in child protective services and child removal, this is a limited and inaccurate depiction.
Social workers provide therapy through a unique lens that considers the individual, community, and broader society. Clinically trained, they support individuals facing mental health challenges with evidence-based interventions. At the community level, they address environmental and social factors that influence well-being, such as access to resources and community safety. On a societal scale, social workers advocate for systemic change and social justice, recognizing how policies and structures impact mental health. This multi-layered approach allows social workers to deliver comprehensive and meaningful care.
